Slips of the Tongue
My words aren't accidents unless they're a typo committed by fingers flying faster than my fingers. Sometimes when I'm speaking and have slips of the tongue it's from my brain firing commands faster than my lips can and tongue can obey. Maybe the mishaps are Freudian, maybe they're ironic, and maybe they're hilariously timed, but I can apologize and move on. What I can't undo is the collateral damage of bystanders, listeners, or readers. I can't couch an edict or statement in bubble wrap or Plexiglas and let the words bounce harmlessly into the ether. I have to own that sometimes words and phrases hurt. I have to own that I say what I mean and that I'm apologizing for any caused pain - not for what I said in the first place.
